While I’m at work I’ve got into the habit of eavesdropping on conversations that kids have with their parents whilst shopping. Most of the times the best I’ll get is a good laugh, which some days, I’m beyond thankful for. Today however was a different kind of day, I mean sure there were your usual, ‘Mom/Dad! I can see myself on that TV there! Why don’t we have this station at home?’ (Sorry kiddo, it’s just the store security camera.), but this one particular conversation made me well up with tears. I still have yet to figure out if it was because I’m super proud of this 8yr old boy for sticking up for himself, or if it was because I wanted to go punch his Dad.
Boy: You know Dad, I really don’t think you like me that much.
Dad: Why? What would make you think something like that?
Boy: Well, you just told me that only girls are waitresses and that boys are waiters.
Dad: Well that’s the truth.
Boy: Mommy says that I can be whatever I want to be as long as I put my mind to it and it fills my heart and soul.
Dad: She’s right. You can be whatever you want to be.
Boy: But Dad, just right now you said that I could never ever be a waitress, and before outside, you said that I couldn’t be a nurse because that was a girl’s job. You don’t believe in me like Mommy does. Right now, at this moment, I want to be a nurse. I don’t know if I’ll always want to be one because Mommy says that sometimes people change their minds, but right now, with my heart and soul, I want to be a nurse when I grow up. You don’t think I can do it because I’m a boy, but Dad, I can be a nurse just as much as a girl can. Oh, and by the way, Mommy says that it doesn’t matter whether it’s a girl or a boy, they’re actually called ‘servers’ nowadays.
